RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

WHAT IS THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM?

The Respiratory System is what allows us to breathe. The major organs in this system are the Nose, Mouth, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, and Lungs. The Respiratory System allows gas exchange; the process of bringing oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out of the body. The Respiratory System filters the air we breathe. The air we breathe in contains microbes that could carry diseases. These microbes could damage our lungs and as well as our health.

WHAT IS RESPIRATION?

Respiration is the exchange of gas (Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide). In simple terms, respiration is the act of breathing. All humans and animals must undergo gas exchange to survive.

ORGANS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

  • THE NOSE

The Nose is an organ that is a part of the upper respiratory tract. It is the only organ in the respiratory system that is visible externally. The air we inhale is breathed through our noses. The nose serves as the main entry for air to flow in our body.

  • THE MOUTH

The Mouth is an organ that is a part of the upper respiratory tract. It is also called the oral cavity. The mouth is the secondary external opening for the respiratory tract.

  • PHARYNX

The Pharynx is an organ that is a part of the upper respiratory tract. It is also called the throat. It leads to two passageways; the esophagus (passageway for food) and trachea (passageway for air).

  • LARYNX

The Larynx is an organ that is a part of the upper respiratory tract. It is also called the voice box. It functions mainly in speech. It is called the voice box because the air rushing out of the lungs makes the vocal cords vibrate and produce sounds.

  • TRACHEA

The Trachea is an organ that is a part of the lower respiratory tract. It is also called the windpipe. This organ has a tube-like structure that can be compared to a vacuum cleaner hose. The Trachea acts as the main passageway to the lungs.

  • MAIN BRONCHI

The Bronchi is an organ that is a part of the lower respiratory tract. The left and right main bronchi are formed because of the division of the trachea. When the air enters the main bronchi, it is already moist, warm, and almost no foreign particles.

  • LUNGS

The Lungs is an organ that is a part of the lower respiratory tract. It is divided into two portions; left lung and right lung. The lungs is the place where the most important part of respiration process (gas exchange) takes place. It holds the respiratory zone and it includes; bronchioles, alveoli, alveolar ducts, and alveolar sacs.

  • DIAPHRAGM

The Diaphragm is an organ that is a part of the lower respiratory tract. It is the main muscle in the respiratory system and is located at the bottom of the ribcage. It is strong and it aids in respiration.
